Chef Akunowicz’s culinary journey began at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, then taking her around the globe as she passionately pursued all ends of the hospitality spectrum. After settling in Boston over a decade ago, Akunowicz found various successes as Sous Chef at Via Matta and Beehive restaurants in Boston and Oleana in Cambridge. Her international work includes the role as Chef at L'Avion Blu Enoteca in Moderna, Italy.
Currently residing at Boston’s Myers & Chang as Executive Chef, Karen’s food is as soulful, fiery and passionate as she is. 2015 brought her a James Beard nomination for “Best Chef Northeast” and in 2014 she put her chicken and waffles recipe to the test when she battled it out on Beat Bobby Flay.
Outside of the Myers & Chang kitchen, queer-fierce-femme Chef Akunowicz can be spotted wielding her talent for organizations such as AIDS Action Committee, No Kid Hungry, Future Chefs, and Lovin Spoonfuls. Akunowicz has been invited to cook for a number of national culinary events such as Boston Chefs at the James Beard house in New York, the Democratic Governors’ Association “Taste of America” Gala with Share Our Strength, and Lovin Spoonfuls Ultimate Tailgate Party with Andrew Zimmern. In 2017 stay tuned for a brand new cookbook stuffed with recipes from the Myers & Chang kitchen, co-authored with Joanne Chang and Christopher Myers.
